History and sights
Settled around the 4th century BC by Greeks from Marseille, who named it Antipolis, Antibes was later taken over by the Romans. Today Antibes is full of Roman artifacts from the ancient town and relics rescued from the sea bottom.
Its position on the border of France and Savoy saw it fortified in the 17th and 18th centuries, and demolished in 1894 so the town could expand. People began to take advantage of its wonderful climate and beautiful scenery and start to build villas and holiday homes.
Explore the Old Town with its original ancient walls. Its narrow cobblestoned streets are crammed with small shops and restaurants. Don't miss the colorful Provencal Market in the centre of Town.
Visit the 17th century Château Grimaldi, home of the Picasso Museum which, in 1946, also was Picasso’s home for six months. When he finally left he gave all the works he had created here to the Château.
Antibes also hosts one of the largest antique shows in Europe each spring. From then on until late September the roads and streets buzz with people from all over the world.
During the summer, the place is packed, primarily with French families. In the evenings, everyone is out at the many outdoor restaurants in the old part of Antibes and in Juan les Pins.
As one of the most famous yacht charter harbors in the Mediterranean, Antibes has a large variety of yacht charter available.
Yacht charter season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have the lightest winds but also the largest crowds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes.
