History and sights

The towns on the island were developed in the ancient times. Numerous archeological findings from the Illyrian times as well as the remains of the Roman town Colentrum, ruins of the Roman summer residences, frescoes and mosaics are scattered on the mainland and under the sea. It is assumed that the Slavic newcomers found the abandoned ancient town and settled there. The island of Murter is first mentioned in 1318.

Today

Nowadays, the economy of the island Murter is based on fishing, farming, growing olives, manufacturing olive oil, but more and more on tourism. The majority of the island is covered in hundred years old olive and fig trees. Murter offers many possibilities for an active vacation, like: tennis, running, cycling, playing bowls, diving, wind surfing and sailing. You can also taste home-made specialties in local restaurants, mostly fish.
