Location and climate
The island Murter belongs to the north Dalmatian island group, the biggest and the densest island group in the Adriatic. It is connected with the mainland by a 37 m long bridge and is located nearby three national parks. National park Kornati is the closest, only 15 km away from Murter, then Krka (50 km) and Paklenica (100 km). South-western part of the island is indented with many pebble bays. In the north-eastern part of the coast have developed towns Jezera and Tisno, while towns Betina and Murter on the north-western part. The warmest months are July and August with temperature above 30 °C and sea temperature up to 24 °C. Betina has 2.699 sunshine hours per year. The coldest months are January and February with the temperature between 5 and 10 °C.
History and sights
The towns on the island were developed in the ancient times. Numerous archeological findings from the Illyrian times as well as the remains of the Roman town Colentrum, ruins of the Roman summer residences, frescoes and mosaics are scattered on the mainland and under the sea. It is assumed that the Slavic newcomers found the abandoned ancient town and settled there. The island of Murter is first mentioned in 1318.
Today
Nowadays, the economy of the island Murter is based on fishing, farming, growing olives, manufacturing olive oil, but more and more on tourism. The majority of the island is covered in hundred years old olive and fig trees. Murter offers many possibilities for an active vacation, like: tennis, running, cycling, playing bowls, diving, wind surfing and sailing. You can also taste home-made specialties in local restaurants, mostly fish.
How to arrive?
By plane
Two closest airports are in Zadar and Split. Zadar is one hour drive by car to the island (60 km), and Split is about one and a half hours drive (90 km) from Murter.
By car or bus
If you prefer traveling along the coast, you can reach Murter by driving through Trieste, Rijeka and along Adriatic Highway toward Šibenik. Or you can reach the highway at Rijeka, or at the junction Žuta Lokva near Senj (60 km south of Rijeka), and continue driving toward Šibenik. If you are coming from the north, the highway Zagreb – Šibenik is the fastest way. Or you can use the alternative way Zagreb – Karlovac – Plitvice – Gračac – Knin – Šibenik. Several daily bus lines are operating from Šibenik to the island Murter.
By ship
You can use one of the regular ferry lines from Rijeka or Dubrovnik toward Zadar or Split, or international ferry lines from Italy (Ancona, Civitanova, Pescara and Gulianova) to Zadar or Split.
